\"LauraWhen it comes to networking, UVA alumna Laura Fleury (Col<\/abbr> class of <\/span>\u201991)<\/strong> believes the most powerful connections start with curiosity and authenticity. After more than three decades as a senior unscripted television executive at A+E Networks\u2014where storytelling and human connection were at the heart of her work\u2014Laura has built a second chapter as a coach, facilitator, and speaker who empowers adults to tame the voice in their head to hear the voice in their heart. She works with leaders, groups and individuals to optimize their potential and realize their dreams through deep internal work and values-aligned goal setting. Her leadership workshops create immersive experiences where professionals develop key competencies from brand building, executive presence and resilience to communicating with impact and building meaningful relationships. Ahead of her Reunions Weekend workshop<\/a>, The Art of Networking: Relationship Building and Career Resilience<\/em>, Laura shares insights from her career journey and why she believes relationship-building is one of the most important skills for long-term professional growth.<\/p>\n

Tell us about your career journey and the experiences that led you to your current work, including your focus on coaching and relationship-building.<\/h2>\n

I\u2019ve always been curious about people, wanting to understand and help them. For more than three decades, that curiosity drove a successful career as an unscripted creative TV executive, primarily at A+E Networks, creating hit series based on compelling true stories about real people.<\/p>\n

From early on, I saw the importance of authentic relationship building and meaningful connections. Whether collaborating with colleagues or working with contributors who trusted us with their stories, active listening, empathy, and respect were essential.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m deeply grateful to the mentors who supported me along the way, and I\u2019ve maintained a commitment to mentorship almost from the moment I graduated from UVA.<\/p>\n

For most of my TV career I felt energized by my work\u2014until something shifted. I still loved what I did, but I was no longer \u201cin love\u201d with it. I found myself drawn to activities that filled my cup, including earning a yoga teacher certification and helping create a mentorship program for rising female leaders at A+E, where I also co-led leadership development workshops.<\/p>\n

Today, my passions are realized in a second chapter as a coach, workshop facilitator, speaker, yoga instructor, and TV consultant. I work with executives, professionals, and leadership teams to identify what they truly want, uncover what may be standing in their way, and build a path toward long-term fulfillment.<\/p>\n

Your session focuses on reframing networking as relationship-building. What inspired this perspective?<\/h2>\n

When people think of networking, they sometimes cringe at what feels transactional and performative. I certainly had that reaction when I first started my career. I had been a shy kid, and the idea of walking into a room of strangers made me queasy.<\/p>\n

Luckily, I\u2019m also wildly curious about people. Through my work in television, I found it easy to build relationships, and over time that naturally became a network across my industry. Instead of pursuing networking that felt political or pressured, I focused on building relationships with people I genuinely liked and found interesting.<\/p>\n

Another turning point came when an advertising industry headhunter encouraged me to clarify my own story. Rather than introducing myself only by my job title, she challenged me to articulate three things: who I am (my strengths), what I bring (the value I create), and what drives me (my \u201cwhy\u201d).<\/p>\n

That clarity gives us confidence and allows us to connect meaningfully\u2014whether it\u2019s a job interview, an industry event, or a passing moment in an elevator. Then networking becomes more natural and more human.<\/p>\n

I deeply believe that the ability to build and nurture relationships is a core competency for any professional for 3 key reasons: 1) Our close friendships fuel our resilience 2) relationships with colleagues provide empathetic support, and 3) human connections bypass technology and algorithms.<\/p>\n

Many people feel uncomfortable or unsure about networking. What\u2019s one mindset shift that can immediately make it feel more authentic?<\/h2>\n

The core mindset shift is to stop thinking of networking as selling yourself and collecting contacts and start thinking of it as practicing curiosity about people and connecting to share and exchange. Don\u2019t try to impress<\/strong>, just try to connect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When networking feels performative, it quickly becomes uncomfortable. But when we approach interactions with genuine curiosity, everything changes. It allows us to be present and show up as our best selves\u2014and curiosity builds trust.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also helpful to remember that most people in a room of strangers feel the same discomfort. Even very accomplished professionals sometimes wonder where they belong. If you\u2019re the one who says hello first, you\u2019re probably doing them a favor.<\/p>\n

At its core, networking is simply the ongoing practice of building relationships\u2014some deep and lasting, others brief but meaningful moments of connection.<\/p>\n

What do you hope alumni will take away from your session?<\/h2>\n

I hope alumni walk away with the sense that networking doesn\u2019t have to feel awkward or transactional\u2014it can feel natural and energizing when we approach it as authentic relationship-building.<\/p>\n

In the session, we\u2019ll explore practical tools to make that easier, including ways to start and deepen conversations with open-ended questions and how to gracefully exit a conversation. We\u2019ll also talk about the power of having clarity on your personal narrative\u2014who you are, what you bring, and what motivates you.<\/p>\n

One simple step alumni can take right away is to reach out to one person this week simply to reconnect. Send a short note to a former classmate, colleague, or mentor and suggest a quick catch-up. No agenda, no ask\u2014just a moment of authentic connection.<\/p>\n

Since then, I\u2019ve led emerging talent and university recruiting programs at companies like Microsoft, Peloton, and Capital One, building scalable, data-driven strategies that strengthen pipelines and fuel business growth. What\u2019s kept me in the game is the impact: creating equitable access, shaping future leaders, and helping organizations innovate through talent. Today, as Head of Emerging Talent at Claritev, I\u2019m building the company\u2019s first early-career function from the ground up\u2014work that brings together purpose, strategy, and the chance to pay forward the opportunities that changed my own life as a first-generation college graduate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Patrick:<\/strong> Similar to William, I found my way into talent acquisition early in my career through campus recruiting, and what started as an entry point quickly turned into a long-term path. The problems change, the technology changes, and the expectations from candidates and businesses keep rising. I\u2019ve stayed because talent acquisition sits at the center of how companies grow, and when it\u2019s done well, it drives real business outcomes. Today, through PopCandi and PopCandi.ai, I\u2019m focused on reimagining how hiring works by combining human judgment with smarter, more personalized technology.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h5 fw-bold mb-2 mt-4\">You\u2019ve seen a lot of talent acquisition trends come and go. What shifts have really stuck and how does today\u2019s AI moment stack up against past \u201cbig changes\u201d?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>William:<\/strong> I\u2019ve seen a lot of trends come and go over the years, from the early days of job boards to social recruiting, employer branding, and increasingly sophisticated tech stacks. The shifts that actually stuck were the ones that changed how we think about the work, not just the tools we used. Moving toward data-informed decision making, focusing on skills over pedigree, and raising the bar on candidate experience all fundamentally changed expectations for talent teams and for candidates.<\/p>\n<p>This current AI moment feels bigger in scope, but not entirely new in spirit. I remember similar excitement when ATS platforms became mainstream and when LinkedIn reshaped sourcing. What feels different now is the speed and the scale. AI has the potential to take a lot of transactional work off recruiters\u2019 plates, which creates space to focus on strategy, relationships, and building more equitable pipelines. Like every major shift before it, the impact will depend on how thoughtfully it\u2019s applied. Used well, AI can help us hire better and more fairly. Used poorly, it just accelerates the same problems we\u2019ve always had.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Patrick:<\/strong> I started in this field when sourcing literally meant flipping through phone books, so I\u2019ve lived through more \u2018game-changing\u2019 moments than I can count. What experience teaches you is that most trends fade, but mindset shifts stick.<\/p>\n<p>The changes that lasted weren\u2019t tools. They were philosophical. We stopped relying purely on instinct and started holding ourselves accountable to data. We moved from unstructured interviews to more disciplined, skills-based evaluation. And we finally recognized that candidate experience isn\u2019t a nice-to-have, it\u2019s part of the hiring outcome.<\/p>\n<p>When I look at the current AI moment through that lens, I don\u2019t see it as a break from the past. I see it as an accelerator. Like job boards or LinkedIn, AI will reshape how work gets done, but its real impact will depend on whether teams use it to make better decisions or just faster ones. The organizations that succeed will be the ones that combine new capability with mature judgment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h5 fw-bold mb-2 mt-4\">AI is everywhere in hiring right now. From where you sit, what\u2019s it actually changing for employers and candidates and where do people tend to get it wrong?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>William:<\/strong> From where I sit, AI is already changing hiring in some very real ways. For employers, it\u2019s helping teams move faster, spot patterns in their data they couldn\u2019t see before, and take a more consistent approach to screening and matching talent. For candidates, when it\u2019s done well, it can mean clearer communication, faster feedback, and a process that feels more transparent instead of like a black box.<\/p>\n<p>Where people get it wrong is assuming AI is a silver bullet. Technology doesn\u2019t fix broken hiring practices, it just scales them. If the inputs are biased or the process isn\u2019t designed thoughtfully, AI will reinforce that at speed. Another common mistake is using AI to create distance from candidates instead of connection. The best teams are using it to reduce busy work so recruiters can spend more time building relationships, coaching hiring managers, and making better decisions. At its best, AI should make hiring more human, not less.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Patrick:<\/strong> From where I sit, AI is becoming the starting point for hiring, not the finish line. It\u2019s incredibly good at getting you to a first draft faster, whether that\u2019s sourcing a market, defining a role, or narrowing a long list to something manageable.<\/p>\n<p>For employers, that changes how quickly they can get oriented and make progress, but it doesn\u2019t remove the need for judgment. The best teams are using AI to inform decisions, not outsource them.<\/p>\n<p>For candidates, the upside is clearer alignment and fewer wasted cycles. The risk is when companies treat AI output as final truth instead of a hypothesis that still needs context and human review.<\/p>\n<p>Where people get it wrong is trying to use AI for everything and anything. When you treat it like an answer machine, you end up with shallow decisions and generic experiences. Used well, AI should help humans ask better questions, not stop asking them.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h5 fw-bold mb-2 mt-4\">Looking ahead to your February 19 session, what\u2019s one \u201cbald truth\u201d about AI and hiring that might surprise people or spark a lively debate?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>William:<\/strong> The bald truth is that candidates often see AI as the enemy screening them out, when the real challenge is the macroeconomic reality we\u2019re in. There are simply more qualified candidates competing for fewer roles, and that pressure would exist with or without AI. Technology gets blamed, but it isn\u2019t the root cause.<\/p>\n<p>What actually makes the difference in this market is human relationships. Referrals, real conversations, and advocates inside an organization matter more than ever. AI may help employers manage volume, but it doesn\u2019t replace trust, context, or someone willing to vouch for your potential. In a tight market, relationships are still the most powerful signal a candidate can have, and that\u2019s often the hardest truth to hear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Patrick:<\/strong> The bald truth for me is that AI is making hiring decisions feel too easy. It gives companies a way to avoid the hard questions, to stop digging, and to rely on technology instead of doing the real work themselves.<\/p>\n<p>When models produce biased shortlists or rankings that are only surface-level deep, companies aren\u2019t getting the best talent. Over time, that creates sameness, reduces diversity, and ultimately hurts quality of hire.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is, AI is good, but it isn\u2019t that good yet. Erin reflects on how her time on Grounds shaped her path as a designer, entrepreneur, and community-builder.<\/p>\n<h2>1. While at UVA, I would create pieces for friends, and we had the best time styling outfits together, especially before events! Girls would stop by our apartment in Raleigh Court at University Circle to pick out jewelry, and I also sold pieces at Eloise (where I worked) in Charlottesville.<\/p>\n<p>As a Studio Art Major focusing on printmaking, I worked a lot with color and shapes; carving linoleum blocks, creating patterns, and translating those designs into jewelry. Later, while earning my master\u2019s at the Curry School, I taught jewelry-making and art classes in after-school programs. Steven Plaskon, my advisor at the Curry School, encouraged me to sell my pieces at the local farmers market, which was a huge turning point, and that\u2019s where it all began!<\/p>\n<h2>2. When you’re back on Grounds, what’s the one place you must visit?<\/h2>\n<p>University Circle, which<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the house I lived in with my best friends, who are still my closest friends today! We loved it for so many reasons, but especially for the front porch. We spent countless hours there, in the rocking chairs, talking, laughing, and just soaking it all in!<\/p>\n<h2>3. What is your favorite UVA memory?<\/h2>\n<p>There are so many little moments that stand out, as simple\u00a0as being on the Lawn on sunny days, lying in the grass, kicking a soccer ball, or tossing a football with friends. But if I had to pick just one, it would be singing The Good Ol\u2019 Song at Scott Stadium. My husband, Bryan White, played football at UVA, and we were dating at the time. It was so special to be in the stands, cheering him on and feeling that incredible school spirit!<\/p>\n<h2>4. What’s one thing you learned at UVA that you carry with you today?<\/h2>\n<p>The Honor System! At UVA, we were constantly reminded to make good choices, act with integrity, and hold ourselves to a high ethical standard. It\u2019s something I\u2019ve carried with me ever since and try to live by every day!<\/p>\n<h2>5. What has been the most pivotal moment in your entrepreneurial journey, and how did your time on Grounds influence your journey?<\/h2>\n<p>One of the most pivotal moments in my entrepreneurial journey was moving into our new space this\u00a0past year! It was a dream come true, bringing together everything I had been working toward all under one roof: a growing team, online order fulfillment, in-person events, and a space where everyone is welcome. I wanted it to be more than just a workspace; I envisioned a place filled with energy, music, open doors, and a true sense of community!<\/p>\n<p>My time at UVA played a huge role in shaping this vision. It taught me the value of connection, creativity, and building something bigger than yourself. I also grew up watching my parents love what they do, I never heard them complain about work, and I\u2019m so grateful to have built a business that I truly enjoy, where I can lose track of time doing what I love!<\/p>\n<h2>6. What are you most looking forward to at Reunions?<\/h2>\n<p>Being back on Grounds with friends! I was visiting family in Peru at the time, and I already had the idea of creating something comfortable and portable to take everywhere I traveled. So I decided to extend the trip, enjoy the time with family, and build a prototype with guidance – many of my Peruvian family members are very entrepreneurial themselves. I was actually having wine and cheese with cousins on the beach one day when the idea to turn this idea into a real business was born, as well as the name. ‘Ola’ means wave in Spanish, and ‘Bola’ means ball. It was going to be a comfortable, lightweight, eco-friendly water-resistant bean bag for the beach. And for outdoor festivals. And parks. And dorm rooms, etc.<\/p>\n<h2>When you\u2019re back on Grounds, what\u2019s the one place you must visit?<\/h2>\n<p>I always visit the Lawn and walk through the Gardens. I also visit my favorite tree, where I always enjoyed reading on a pretty day.<\/p>\n<h2>What is your favorite UVA memory?<\/h2>\n<p>There are too many to list! Football games, happy hours at Biltmore, parties with friends. Constitutional Law and anything Larry Sabato was teaching were my favorite classes. There were never enough hours to attend all the interesting classes, so I would often sit in the big lecture rooms for classes I wasn’t actually enrolled in\u2014especially Psychology classes\u2014and just listen to interesting lectures.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s one thing you learned at UVA that you carry with you today?<\/h2>\n<p>I had one professor who would always remind us that “correlation is not causation.” That always stuck with me and has served me well for any type of analytical thinking.<\/p>\n<h2>How do you stay connected to UVA?<\/h2>\n<p>I made lifelong friends at UVA who I keep in touch with regularly, even though many of us are all over the place these days\u2014and I love going to Reunions! There’s a UVA Club of Austin, and I try to meet up with the Wahoos here when I am in town. From that single shop, we\u2019ve grown to nine locations in Crozet, Charlottesville, Richmond and most recently Williamsburg, all fueled by an incredible team and an expansive roasting operation.<\/p>\n<h2>When you’re back on Grounds, what’s the one place you must visit?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Brandon: <\/strong>There\u2019s something about being on The Lawn that just transports me back to college. It\u2019s an oasis amongst all the hustle and bustle of the city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brad:<\/strong> I always love making time for a stop into Take it Away, particularly when I can add Take it Away Sauce and a bag of bread ends to my sandwich order.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dan: <\/strong>The Grit Coffee shop on Elliewood Ave is probably the place on Grounds I visit the most. My wife and daughter and I will get coffee from the shop and then walk to the Lawn, and the vibe in the shop brings me back to my college days.<\/p>\n<h2>What is your favorite UVA memory?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Brandon: <\/strong>I sang in The Virginia Gentlemen when I was in undergrad and we got to perform all over the world for so many interesting people. While I was in school, we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the group and we had members from the original group all the way up to the current group performing in Cabell Hall. It was amazing having that connection so many decades of VGs. We now have anniversary concerts every 5 years which has been very special to be a part of.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brad: <\/strong>During my first year of undergrad, a group of friends had mapped out a frisbee golf course that traversed most of Grounds. Some of my favorite memories are of teeing off toward the Rotunda from the steps of Madison Hall at midnight each week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dan:<\/strong> When I was at Darden, we used to hang out at Sloney\u2019s Pub inside the old Darden Inn on Friday and Saturday nights, which was like going to the Cheers bar where everyone knows your name. The Inn was demolished and replaced with the beautiful Forum Hotel a few years after I graduated. I\u2019m not bitter at all.<\/p>\n<h2>What’s one thing you learned at UVA that you carry with you today?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Brandon:<\/strong> I took several architecture classes that truly challenged me to see things from new perspectives. I still carry forward the attention to detail and holistic problem-solving approach I was exposed to.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brad:<\/strong> While I learned a lot of valuable things both as an undergraduate and during my time in grad school, I think the primary thing that I carry with me today is the value of relationships and clear communication – both personally and professionally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dan:<\/strong> The amazing professors and classmates I had the great fortune to be surrounded by during my time at Darden exposed me to so many different approaches to mitigating business risk and solving problems. I would say I draw upon that diversity thinking on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<h2>How do you stay connected to UVA?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Brandon:<\/strong> Living in Charlottesville I can\u2019t help but stay connected. Our family loves going to all UVA sports\u2014especially baseball and basketball games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brad:<\/strong> Living and working in Charlottesville gives us ample opportunities to stay connected to the university community, but one of my favorite ways to stay connected is attending UVA basketball and soccer games with my kids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dan: <\/strong>Our business definitely keeps us connected to UVA, if only because of the number of amazing Hoos we have on our team across the Grit Coffee shops.
