\"TaliyaComing to UVA was a huge adjustment for me, and there were times when I genuinely felt like giving up. But the Ridley Scholarship Program changed that story. Ridley gave me community, support, and a sense of belonging that carried me through every high and low. It became more than a scholarship\u2014it became my home and truly the reason I stayed at UVA. I am endlessly thankful for the scholars, directors, and board members who poured into me. The connections I\u2019ve built and the memories I\u2019ve made through this program are priceless. I\u2019ll cherish every laugh we shared, every moment of encouragement, and every reminder that I wasn\u2019t alone. I love this community, and I mean it when I say Ridley shaped who I am and who I\u2019m becoming. This program pushed me to grow, kept me grounded, and reminded me I had a family here. I wouldn\u2019t be the person I am today without the love, support, and belief I received from this community. One day, I hope to give back\u2014even serve on the board\u2014so future scholars feel the same love, support, and belonging that carried me to this moment. had a tight-knit support system on Grounds from the very start that was formed by love and merit rather than competitiveness. Older scholars always reach out to and support new scholars, showing them that they belong in the Ridley family and at UVA. That encouragement is something I\u2019ve been able to give to others\u2014I became an RA in my second year and helped Black first-years navigate Grounds in ways I could have only dreamed of. Ridley Scholarship Program, committed to strengthening the University of Virginia by attracting and supporting the nation\u2019s most meritorious Black students, has awarded full scholarships to six UVA-bound high school graduates.<\/p>\n<p>Five of the new Ridley Scholars come from Virginia. Each went through a competitive, multi-step process. In addition to receiving full tuition and fees, each will have an opportunity to take part in the Ridley Scholar Experience, an array of enrichment programs that includes foreign travel and career networking.<\/p>\n<h2>The Scholars<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Tanise Cole<\/strong>\u00a0of Norfolk, recipient of the Ridley Reid Scholarship, captained the varsity soccer team at Matthew F. Maury High School, where she graduated from the Maury Medical and Health Specialties Program, was a member of the National Honor Society, participated in the Model United Nations club and was elected vice president of the sophomore class. Focused on helping those who are underserved in her community, she plans to major in nursing, with the goal of obtaining a master\u2019s degree and becoming an obstetrical\/gynecological nurse practitioner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Madison DeLoach<\/strong>\u00a0of Richmond is a National Honor Society graduate of Hermitage High School, where she was a varsity cheerleader and completed Virginia Commonwealth University\u2019s Dental Scholars program. She is also a member of the Henrico chapter of Diversify Our Narrative, which focuses on providing diverse authors and topics in the English curriculum. The recipient of the Richmond Ridley Clarence Cain Scholarship, she plans to major in biology on a pre-dental track with hopes of becoming a prosthodontist, pediatric dentist or oral surgeon focused on ethical, moral and social issues in the health care system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>V Godfrey<\/strong>\u00a0of Reston, recipient of the Flagship-Graves Scholarship, graduated from Bishop O\u2019Connell High School as an AP Scholar with Honor, was a varsity cheerleader and competed on the track and field team. They served as vice president of the Diversity, Equity and Unity council, in the Black Student Union and the Keyette service organization. Godfrey plans to pursue undergraduate research in the cognitive science program, as well as participate in the Active Minds club and the International Relations Organization, with a goal of becoming a cognitive therapist, assisting those who have experienced large-scale trauma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simone Minor<\/strong>\u00a0of Dover, Delaware, recipient of the Holland Blackburn Scholarship, led the Black Student Union, Gender X, Jefferson Awards, BioMedical Club and yearbook extracurriculars at The Tatnall School. She served in student government for four years and co-founded a service project focused on helping area women and children through financial donations and volunteer work. An incoming Echols Scholar, she plans to major in public health or sociology with the goal of serving the community as a medical professional.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jordan Mondrey<\/strong>\u00a0of Chesterfield played varsity volleyball, served as senior class historian and was a member of the National Honor Society at Monacan High School. The recipient of the Meikel Andrade Scholarship, she plans to major in biology with a minor in psychology with a goal of attending medical school and becoming an emergency room physician.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taliya Moss-Melendez<\/strong>\u00a0of Richmond is the recipient of the first S. Buford Scott Scholarship, established in 2021 with a $1 million gift from Truist Wealth in honor of business and philanthropic leader S. Buford Scott and Scott & Stringfellow. Moss-Melendez is a graduate of Richmond Community High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, served as a student ambassador and also obtained an associate\u2019s degree in social sciences, graduating Phi Theta Kappa, from Reynolds Community College. She plans to major in chemistry and pursue a career as a pharmacist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to welcome this new cohort of Ridley Scholars to the Ridley family,\u201d said Simone Pollard, a 1993 alumna, Ridley\u2019s board chair and a strategist at a global assessment and learning company in New Jersey. \u201cRidley Scholars continue to\u00a0impact the University community through their scholarship in the classroom and service and leadership outside of the classroom. Ridley Scholarship Program is named for the first Black graduate of the University. He stayed connected to UVA and the McIntire School throughout his life, and was committed to making the UVA student experience the best it could be. (September 8, 2021) \u2013\u00a0The Walter N. Ridley Scholarship Program and the UVA Alumni Association today announced that Truist Wealth has made a $1 million gift in honor of business and philanthropic leader S. Buford Scott and Scott & Stringfellow. The gift establishes a fully endowed Ridley Scholarship for the entire in-state cost of attendance for a young Black scholar at the University of Virginia as well as the formation of the Truist-Ridley Leadership and Financial Education Academy, benefitting rising second and third-year Black students.<\/p>\n<p>Buford Scott served from 1974 to 2018 as the board chair of Richmond-based Scott & Stringfellow, previously a wholly-owned subsidiary of BB&T Corporation. BB&T Corporation merged with SunTrust Bank in 2019 to form Truist Financial Corporation (NYSE: TFC) and in 2021 the Scott & Stringfellow name was retired.<\/p>\n<p>Scott served as a two-time appointee to the University of Virginia\u2019s Board of Visitors as well as a member of the Alumni Association Board of Managers. He was also chairman of the merit-based Jefferson Scholars Program, which, like the Ridley Program, provides scholarships and programming support to attract the best and brightest students to UVA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis generous gift from Truist Wealth will enable scholarship support for a deserving student as well as financial education for many more,\u201d UVA President Jim Ryan said. \u201cIt is a fitting tribute to Buford Scott, a true UVA citizen and leader whose legacy as a champion for opportunity is reflected in this unique partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A new scholarship to advance diversity, equity and inclusion<\/h2>\n<p>The Buford Scott Ridley Scholarship, a renewable four-year merit scholarship, will be awarded to a Black student from the Commonwealth of Virginia and will cover tuition and fees, room and board, and a robust programmatic academy experience, the Ridley Scholar Experience, which includes unique opportunities for leadership, career training and immersive experiences. The first student recipient of the Buford Scott Ridley Scholarship will begin their education at UVA in Fall 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuford had many passions in his life, chief among them were his family, education, equity and the University of Virginia,\u201d said Joseph M. Thompson, chief wealth officer of Truist. \u201cThe Buford Scott Ridley Scholarship honors the causes Buford championed, leaves a lasting legacy of the Scott family and the company they helped build, and demonstrates Truist\u2019s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. We look forward to the amazing things the scholarship recipients and Academy participants will achieve at UVA, and in their lives and careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship will be administered by the UVA Alumni Association\u2019s Ridley Scholarship Program team. The selection criteria for the Buford Scott Ridley Scholar will be consistent with current evaluation standards of the Ridley Program for high academic standing, outstanding leadership and community involvement.<\/p>\n<h2>Financial and career education take center stage<\/h2>\n<p>The impact of this gift will also benefit rising second- and third-year Black students through the launch of a financial and career education pilot program funded by Truist Wealth. The Truist-Ridley Leadership and Financial Education Academy will partner with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truistleadershipinstitute.com\/\">Truist Leadership Institute<\/a>, the Ridley Scholarship Program and the UVA Career Center to provide cohorts of Black students classroom and learning experiences covering leadership, and the potential for careers in financial services, technology, consulting and related fields.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy program will provide students opportunities to learn from Truist executives and the Truist Leadership Institute\u2019s award-winning faculty. It will also introduce students to Truist and the company\u2019s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as opportunities in the financial services industry.<\/p>\n<p>For Truist, this collaboration is a remarkable way to connect with high-quality students in an authentic setting and increase awareness of the opportunities Truist is committed to providing.<\/p>\n<p>The Ridley Scholarship Program and the UVA Alumni Association will work with the UVA Career Center to develop selection criteria for the program, which will include, but not be limited to, Ridley Scholars. The first Academy program will take place during the UVA\u2019s January term of 2022, followed by a May 2022 program. The program will support two cohorts of 20-25 students each year, for a total of up to 100 students over a two-year period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are incredibly grateful that Truist Wealth chose the Ridley Scholarship Program as its partner in honoring Buford Scott and creating the Academy, the first-of-its-kind program at the University. Truist Wealth\u2019s landmark gift will aid the Ridley Scholarship Program in attracting exceptional students to the University, as well as ensure that our students have the opportunity to participate in innovative leadership and financial education programming that will help prepare them for their post-college personal and professional lives,\u201d said Consuelo Kendall, Chair of the Ridley Scholarship Program.<\/p>\n<p>Scott championed racial and community equity through educational access and financial education. He co-founded the Virginia Council on Economic Education and supported its work for more than 50 years. He devised the \u201cStock Market Game,\u201d which became a staple of financial education for public elementary school children in Virginia. He also founded Elk Hill, a nonprofit that runs residential and health services for at-risk, low-income children through specialized education, community-based services, and residential treatment programs across the Commonwealth. He was involved in numerous other programs to assist at-risk children and promote their education, including faith-based projects in the Richmond area.<\/p>\n<h2>About the Ridley Scholarship Program<\/h2>\n<p>Established in 1987, the Walter N. Ridley Scholarship Program is named for the first Black graduate of the University of Virginia. The program, which seeks to attract Black students of the highest academic caliber, has awarded more than 300 scholarships and held assets of $14.2 million as of the past fiscal year. Ridley Scholarship Program, a foundation dedicated to strengthening the University of Virginia by attracting and supporting Black students of the highest caliber, has announced this year\u2019s new Ridley Scholars.<\/p>\n<p>Five of the new Ridley Scholars arrived as part of the first-year class, while two received the honor as rising third-year students. Each went through a competitive, multistep selection process. All are women, all but one are from Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>They will receive scholarships covering their full tuition and related fees while attending the University of Virginia and the opportunity to take part in the Ridley Scholar Experience, an array of enrichment programs that includes foreign travel and career networking.<\/p>\n<h2>The First-Years<\/h2>\n<p>Sophia Chambliss of Mechanicsville, recipient of the Ridley Bryce Scholarship, studied in the International Baccalaureate program at Atlee High School, where she also captained the varsity cheer team. A dancer who has performed with Richmond-area and Central Virginia dance companies, she co-founded Brown Ballerinas for Change, which encourages members of underrepresented populations to participate in ballet and uses dance as a form of advocacy. Chambliss plans to major in biology and pursue a career in health care.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Hall of Chesterfield, recipient of the Ridley Reid Scholarship, served as Student Government Association vice president and founded the Black Indigenous and People of Color Student Union at Monacan High School, where she was inducted into the National Honor Society. She plans to major in politics and pursue her interests in social justice and civil equity.<\/p>\n<p>Zo\u00eb Jenkins, recipient of the Holland Blackburn Scholarship, is a National Honor Society graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington, Kentucky. The National Geographic Society awarded her a Young Explorer\u2019s grant in support of the \u201cGet Schooled\u201d podcast she created with her school\u2019s voice team, focusing on problems and solutions in education, one of her several high school ventures.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriella Watson of Chesterfield graduated from Richmond\u2019s Maggie Walker Governor\u2019s School for Government and International Studies, a public school for gifted students. She served on its School Advisory Council, Campus Life During COVID Committee and Removing Structural Barriers Committee. A recipient of the Richmond Ridley Clarence Cain Scholarship, she plans to major in chemistry or biology, with plans of being a pharmacist by day and author by night.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor Whirley of Midlothian, this year\u2019s other Ridley Reid Scholarship recipient, was active in James River High School\u2019s Center for Leadership & International Relations. She plans to build on that experience by applying to UVA\u2019s Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy when eligible and hopes to go to law school. Her high school activities included leadership positions in show choir and the Spanish club.<\/p>\n<h2>The Third-Years<\/h2>\n<p>Tracy Agyemang of Woodbridge is the recipient of the Gregory Ledford Ridley Scholarship, designated for third-year students entering UVA\u2019s McIntire School of Commerce. Raised in New York as well as the commonwealth, she is a world traveler and a women\u2019s rugby player. She plans to concentrate her studies in marketing and information technology while also taking a track in real estate.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy Carter of Goochland received the Sylvia V. Terry Scholarship, awarded to third-year students demonstrating leadership, a strong record of community service and significant mentoring experience. An architecture student with a desire to start her own firm, she is involved with the Office of African-American Affairs\u2019 Peer Advisor Program, the Black Student Alliance and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the Ridley Scholarship Program\u2019s inception, our scholars have made significant contributions to the University that have transformed Grounds and improved the overall student experience,\u201d said 2003 alumna Consuelo A. Kendall, Ridley\u2019s board chair and a corporate attorney in Maryland. \u201cWe are excited to welcome these new scholars into the Ridley family, and we are confident that they will uphold Dr. Ridley\u2019s legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Established in 1987 in ongoing partnership with the UVA Alumni Association, the Walter N. Ridley Scholarship Program is named for the first Black graduate of the University.
