The annual scholarship will be awarded to an incoming first-year student from the area with preference for high scholastic achievement.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"alert alert-warning\" role=\"alert\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The deadline for this year has passed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<hr class=\"dots\" \/>\n<h2>About the Scholarship<\/h2>\n<p>When Lee Poechmann (<abbr title=\"School of Architecture\">Arch<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201997) became Club President in 2019, part of his mission was to tap a latent desire percolating for years among Hoos that call Jacksonville home.\u00a0 After some additional research and working with UVA\u2019s Office of Engagement, the UVA Club of Jacksonville began an ambitious project:\u00a0 to endow a full-tuition scholarship for a future UVA student from Jacksonville.\u00a0 The intent was to simply give the gift of UVA, and in the process create a legacy that would live beyond the local Club.\u00a0 In December 2021, the Club received its initial seed gift from Courtney Blackburn (<abbr title=\"College of Arts &amp; Sciences\">Col<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201999) and her husband Anthony Bartek to establish the yet-to-be-named Scholarship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"border-start border-5 ps-2\"><a class=\"icon-link icon-link-hover\" href=\"https:\/\/uvaalumni.org\/scholarships\/alumni-association-awards\/uva-club-of-jacksonville\/interview-with-blythe-waters\/\">Read an interview with Jacksonville native Blythe Waters (<abbr title=\"College of Arts &amp; Sciences\">Col<\/abbr> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">class of <\/span>\u201999) <i class=\"bi bi-chevron-right\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since that first donation, the Scholarship has grown.\u00a0 It now has a standalone account (invested similar to the UVA Fund) separate from the Club\u2019s general operating account; it has a Leadership Committee hard at work on governance documents, the application and selection process, and (except during covid) awards modest scholarships to local rising first-years from Jacksonville.\u00a0 The Committee is also endeavoring to fund raise, and as the nest egg grows to its ultimate goal, looks forward to awarding greater, more significant and impactful sums to students to make higher education possible for future Hoos from Jacksonville.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"btn btn-orange\" href=\"https:\/\/www.givecampus.com\/campaigns\/20633\/donations\/new?designation=uvaclubofjacksonvillescholarship&amp;\">Donate<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"dots orange\" \/>\n<h2>Past Winners<\/h2>\n<dl class=\"row\">\n<dt class=\"col-2 col-lg-1\">2024<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"col-10 col-lg-11\">Fiona Bailey<\/dd>\n<dt class=\"col-2 col-lg-1\">2023<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"col-10 col-lg-11\">Grace Huie<\/dd>\n<dt class=\"col-2 col-lg-1\">2022<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"col-10 col-lg-11\"><em>Scholarship not awarded<\/em><\/dd>\n<dt class=\"col-2 col-lg-1\">2021<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"col-10 col-lg-11\">Alston Rachels<\/dd>\n<dt class=\"col-2 col-lg-1\">2020<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"col-10 col-lg-11\">Sofia Marrero<\/dd>\n<dt class=\"col-2 col-lg-1\">2019<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"col-10 col-lg-11\">Connor Murphy<\/dd>\n<dt class=\"col-2 col-lg-1\">2017<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"col-10 col-lg-11\">Margaret (Meg) Van Cleve<\/dd>\n<dt class=\"col-2 col-lg-1\">2016<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"col-10 col-lg-11\">Neely Egan<\/dd>\n<dt class=\"col-2 col-lg-1\">2015<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"col-10 col-lg-11\">Anna Glassman<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<hr class=\"dots orange\" \/>\n<h2>Student Testimonial<\/h2>\n<figure>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote\"><p>During my first year at UVA, I joined the Alternative Investment Fund to learn more about finance and investing in hopes of becoming a part of the comm school. I attended meetings and provided lessons and pitches to fellow members. I also joined Creating Assets, Savings, and Hope (CASH), a community-service organization that files taxes for underprivileged individuals and families in the Charlottesville community. I was the Program Director for CASH and oversee site operations, in addition to filing for clients and reviewing returns. Otherwise, I tutored refugees in English as a volunteer through the International Rescue Committee (IRC). I spent lots of my free time hanging out with friends and love to explore Charlottesville by running.<\/p>\n<p>The UVA Club of Jax scholarship provided me with the funds to purchase textbooks and dorm room essentials for my first semester, as well as start the year with a confident base.
