Dr. John Bales Schorling
John Schorling MD, MPH is Professor of Medicine and Director of the University of Virginia Mindfulness Center. He practiced general internal medicine and palliative care for many years before transitioning to now seeing patients in the UVA Outpatient Addiction Treatment Program. He also founded the UVA Clinician Wellness Program which he directed for over 20 years. During a three-month trip to India and Nepal after completing his medical training 40 years ago, he first encountered and began practicing meditation. Dr. Schorling joined the faculty at UVA in 1988 and subsequently participated in the mindfulness teacher training program with Jon Kabat-Zinn (who developed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction). He has been studying and teaching mindfulness since, with a focus on those working in healthcare. He currently lives in Nellysford with his wife, spending his free time with family (including four grandsons), gardening, running, scuba diving and traveling. Earlier this year he and his wife walked part of the Camino de Santiago in Spain.
