Mentor: Avery L. (Col class of ’28)

Meet our College Compass Connection Mentors! In this rapid-fire interview, hear from Avery L. (Col class of ’28), a double major in Global Public Health and Psychology from New York, New York.

What is your favorite spot on Grounds, and why does it feel special to you?

One of my favorite spots on Grounds is the Lawn! As the University’s central “quad,” it carries deep historical significance while serving as the heart of many cherished traditions. Whether I’m picnicking with friends, studying under a tree, taking part in annual Trick-or-Treating festivities, attending Lighting of the Lawn or joining in the midnight snowball fight—the Lawn always brings me joy and never fails to foster a strong sense of community.

What is your favorite Bodo’s order?

Unfortunately I cannot eat at Bodo’s because I have celiac disease.

What is one tradition, like Lighting of the Lawn, painting Beta Bridge, Trick or Treating on the Lawn, that you did not expect to love but now cannot imagine college without?

One tradition I didn’t expect to love, or even know about, is the midnight snowball fight on the Lawn. During the first snowfall of the year students bundle up and gather together, and as the clock strikes midnight, a massive snowball fight erupts! There’s something wonderfully spontaneous about everyone pausing whatever they’re doing—whether asleep in bed or preparing for an exam—to participate in this fun school tradition. It perfectly captures the vibrant energy and strong sense of community at UVA.

What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

You can find me cheering on our athletic teams most weekends! School spirit at UVA is truly contagious—no matter the sport, every game or match is filled with students dressed in orange and blue, proudly singing “The Good Old Song.” Go Hoos!

What has surprised you most about your experience?

Before arriving on Grounds, I knew UVA was a special place. Since then, I’ve come to realize that what makes it truly exceptional is not only its rich history, engaged students, gorgeous Grounds, outstanding academics, or abundant opportunities, but the way it transforms and inspires the people lucky enough to become part of its community. For me, UVA has become more than just a school—it’s home.

My favorite spot to study is…?

My favorite spot to study is in the Rotunda! I appreciate its grandeur, architectural beauty, and historical significance, along with its convenient location between the Corner and central Grounds. It’s also a fun spot for me personally because two of my friends work at the front desk and I often get to see them there!

My favorite class or professor has been…?

My favorite class is Gender and the Gothic! Although the subject isn’t related to my double major in Psychology and Global Public Health, I enrolled primarily because my advisor, Cristina Griffin, is the professor. I’ve found the course incredibly engaging! In particular, I loved the research project we completed on an 18th-century Gothic text selected from the Special Collections Library—it was truly fascinating!

What is one piece of advice you wish someone had given you before your first day at UVA?

I wish someone had told me that it’s okay not to have everything figured out on day one! Stay curious and open: take not only the classes that fulfill requirements, but also the ones that interest you; invite a classmate for coffee; join a club to learn a new skill and meet new people; and connect with professors on a personal level. UVA is full of opportunities—explore and make the most of them!

How has the UVA student community, whether through clubs, Greek life, athletics or informal friendships, helped you find your people?

I have found my people at UVA through both organized groups and everyday connections. Club sports, internships and Greek life have introduced me to peers who inspire and support me, while casual friendships formed in dorms or classes have given me diverse perspectives and a true sense of belonging. Together, these communities make me feel at home.

As a child of a UVA alum, how has your experience compared to the stories you grew up hearing, and what’s your favorite new tradition you have discovered on your own?

Growing up, I heard countless UVA stories from my mom and her friends! It wasn’t until I considered where I wanted to spend my college years that I realized just how much the University, and her experience, positively shaped her life. Now, I see it shaping mine too! We share traditions, from cheering on our sports teams to participating in Greek life, while I’m also creating my own, like hosting holidays for friends. Being at UVA, just like my mom was over 35 years ago, has not only brought me closer to her, but also strengthened my sense of belonging in this incredible community.
