Welcome to your first year, Class of 2030!
Are you interested in gaining leadership experience, getting to know your peers, and creating community within your class? If you answered “yes,” then we hope you will consider running to be a member of First Year Council (FYC)!
FYC is part of the overall Class Council and Trustees program, advised by the UVA Alumni Association and Student Affairs. During your first few weeks on Grounds, you will have the opportunity to run in an election for a spot on FYC. Three students from each first-year housing association, and two from each Residential College, will be elected to serve on the council and will later have an opportunity to run for Class of 2030’s President or Vice-President in a second election. (Note: Only first-years who were first elected onto FYC will be eligible to later run for President or Vice-President). The President and Vice-President will also select general body members for executive positions, such as committee chairs, treasurer, and secretary.
Once on FYC, members will be put on committees, determined by the officers, to plan fun events that meet the needs of their classmates. Events from the past have included the First Year Formal, First Year 5K, career development workshops, free food pop-ups, speaker series events, and more. See below for this fall’s timeline and dates to save:
- Early September—First Year Council Elections (Keep an eye out on the University Board of Elections website, as they will update when important election dates and information become available)!
- September 16, 6:30 p.m.—First FYC General Body Meeting and Dinner (location TBD)
- September 20, 4–5 p.m.—FYC General Body Meeting #2 (Newcomb Commonwealth Room)
- September 27, 4–5 p.m.—FYC General Body Meeting #3 (Newcomb Commonwealth Room)
- Early October—Elections for Class of 2030 President and Vice-President (who will also lead First Year Council)
- October 11, 4–5 p.m.—FYC General Body Meeting #4, led by the newly elected Class President & Vice-President (Newcomb Commonwealth Room)
- The remaining general body meetings will occur every Sunday, 4–5 p.m. in the fall semester (excluding University holidays and breaks). In the spring semester, meetings will move to a bi-weekly schedule.
